Don’t Set Goals;- Set Strategies!
This is what Alex Hormozi recently said. This is the man that wrote the highly acclaimed book called $100 Million Offers.

Should You Not Have Goals?
You definitely should have goals but just having goals is not enough.
You should also have a plan to reach your goal and a plan without a winning strategy is not a very good plan.
We all know that having the intension to do something will not always lead to actually doing it.
Most of us will procrastinate or even have self-sabotaging tendencies that will keep us from doing things that we know we should do.
The question is: “How can we overcome this and become more proactive in what we do?”
I see it this way. There are a few steps that we must take before we can get to our goals.
Steps to take before you set your Goal.
- DECIDE to reach your goal, no matter what it takes.
- Find your WHY and clarify your VISION.
- Create an OUTLINE of what your plan, your strategy should be.
- Give SHAPE to your plan and PRIORITIZE your steps.
- IMPLEMENT your plan by using this strategy first.
Now you can reach your goal without a doubt.
Let us now look at each step in more depth to see how we can apply it in a simple and practical way.
Step 1 – Decision
Nothing will happen until you decide to make a change.
Everything will stay exactly the same until you take a firm decision to change your life. To make progress, you must change.
You must change your old habits of watching life go by.
Fortunately, it is well within your power to do just that.
Sometimes life will force you to make that choice like it happened to me on 2nd of June 1990.
I had the flu but just kept on with my work. Suddenly I had a severe pain in my chest and my left arm went limb.
I was only 35 years old, but I immediately knew that I was having a heart attack because I was a smoker, neglected my health and was overweight.
My wife rushed me to hospital, but it was more than 65 kilometres away and most of it was a bad dirt road. Enroute, I lost consciousness, stopped breathing and my wife panicked and had an accident.
During the accident I was thrown forward and my chest hit the dashboard hard. My heart started to beat again, and it saved my life. I got a second chance in life…
My wife escaped without a scratch and the vehicle was written off! Nobody believed that we could have escaped unharmed from such a crash.
This experience helped me to make the decision to change my life drastically. I stopped smoking while I was in hospital for ten days and never smoked again.
It made me decide to live a better, more healthy life and to give more to others. We later joined a church group and went on missions to Albania each year.
What will be your decision before it is too late to make one?
Step 2 – Your Why and Your Vision
Now that you have made your decision to change, you must find out WHY you want to change. Without a strong enough WHY, you will not have the drive to persist.
Dean Graziosi shared a simple method with which you can find your WHY. He calls it Seven Levels Deep.
Keep asking these questions until you know the truth about yourself:
- Why did I decide to change in the first place?
- Why am I doing what I decided to do?
- Why do I feel that it is for the best?
- Why would it help me?
- Why do it now?
- Why this?
- Why me?
Go as deep as you possibly can to find your real WHY.
This will enable you to get a clear picture of your VISION.
What you should do…
Step 3 – Create an Outline
You can do this in many ways.
Some people like to draw things, make sketches or doodle.
Others, like me being an engineer, like to create spreadsheets filled with data and calculations.
Do what comes naturally to you but first close your eyes and ask for help to see your vision clearly so that you can create your outline.
Write down an outline of your vision with as much detail as you can think of or can see in your mind’s eye. Imagine how you will feel once you reach your goal, what will you do, who will you be?
Don’t worry about the sequence or how you will be able to do it now. That will come later.
Step 4 – Shape and Priorities
Now that you have an outline of your vision, you can give more shape to it by asking a few more questions.
- What bad habits will I have to get rid of?
- How can I change my attitude to become the person I want to be?
- What new skills do I need to become the new me?
- What knowledge do I need to have more success?
- What are the steps I need to take to see results?
- In what sequence should these steps be taken?
- What should be my new priorities in life?
- On what should I focus now?
- What is my next step?
Write everything down in your journal and make sticky notes of each step. Put them up somewhere where you can easily organize them in the right order.
Take the first one and focus on it alone until you know exactly what to do. If you want to do what is in line with your purpose in life, it will come to you clearly. Listen to your inner voice and follow your gut feeling.
Step 5 – Implementation
Implementing steps to reach your goal is an ongoing thing. It will become your way of life.
It always starts with a single step just like a journey of a thousand miles. Do not look backwards except to take what was good and to build on it.
Forget about your failures and mistakes of the past. Only remember the lessons you learned from it and use it to prevent future mistakes.
Use this same 5-step formula to tackle each project you undertake from now onwards and you will see more success than you can imagine.
