Introduction to List Building

To build a prospect list is by far the smartest thing that you can do with Online or Internet Marketing. To sell directly online has become very difficult and the competition is fierce.

By building a list of people with whom you can communicate on a regular basis, allow you to build a relationship with your list members. By getting to know you and what you stand for, they will either unsubscribe from your list or start to trust in you.

Those that unsubscribe is not a loss. In fact you do not want people on your list that do not resonate with you. You only want to work with people that can benefit from what you have to share with them.

Once you have the trust of your list members, you can then make suggestions about your own or other people’s products or services.

In the beginning of my online career I made the mistake to try and get everybody on my list. This did not work well at all until I learned from Brendon Burchard that it is much better to only focus on one specific topic and then to get only those people that are really interested in that topic to join my list.

Those will be the people that will benefit the most in what you have to share especially if you can solve a problem for them.

Brendon wrote a book in 2012 called The Charge – Activating the 10 Human Drives That Make You Feel Alive. This book had a huge impact in my life because we had similar experiences.

We both nearly died in horrific car accidents but miraculously escaped to get a second chance in life. This book helped me to make the decision to do everything possible to help others live a better life.

Building a Relationship of Trust

Here is a short list of things that you can do to build trust:

  1. Tell your story that relates to what you are offering them.
  2. Ask them questions about their problems or obstacles.
  3. Give them links to click to get more valuable tips, checklists or shortcuts – this will get them to be comfortable in clicking your links.
  4. Offer to answer their questions about your topic.
  5. Show them peaks inside your products to wet their appetite.
  6. Tell them how your product or service can change their life.
  7. Explain how you support your customers and are able to help them.
  8. Tell them about the mistakes that you made and how they can avoid making the same mistakes.

The main purpose of this communication with your list members is to get them to open and read your emails. They should be glad when they see an email from you because they know in advance that you have valuable insights that they can use to better their lives.

Get them to beg you for more and then subtly tell them that the real valuable stuff is behind your paywall and that they will have to invest to gain access to it. Gentle pre-selling will do wonders for your conversion rate.

People Don’t Want to be Sold to but They Love Buying

In this introduction we have touched on how you could use your list to pre-sell to your list members without hard selling your stuff.

If you can do it well, they will start to ask you for more and they will be prepared to pay for it.
